An entry capsule burns through the Earth's atmosphere on a course to change history, carrying the hopes of the colonies' citizens. A cannon is raised to shoot down a shuttle blocking the path, but an assault carrier appears. The assault carrier attacks, the entry capsule is shed, and Wing Gundam is revealed. The Gundam survives its first encounter with OZ after shooting down two Aries suits, but is thrown to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean by a suicidal Leo (though not a suicidal Leo pilot...).
An expedition to locate and retrieve the Gundam begins. However, as soon as the Alliance finds it, so does someone else. The Gundam called Death easily takes care of the Alliance search party and retrieves the Gundam. Duo Maxwell, pilot of Gundam Deathscythe, is amazed to have found a Gundam in such good shape at the bottom of the sea and decides to use it for parts.
However, upon resurfacing, Duo finds that the Gundam's true pilot, Hiiro Yuy, plans not to recover the Gundam, but to destroy it. Although Duo manages to foil an attempt by Hiiro to kill Vice Foreign Minister Dorlian's daughter, Relena, he is not able to stop Hiiro from launching three torpedoes at the rising Gundams.
Hiiro Yuy is seriously injured, but has no chance to recover in the Alliance military hospital to which he's taken. Duo, the very same Duo that shot him, arrives to help him escape, and once again, they raise the Gundams out of the ocean.
Wing Gundam participates in periodic missions sent in from Dr. J, the builder of the Gundam, who has remained in outer space. One such mission involves stopping OZ from transporting a shipment of Taurus space mobile suits through Siberia. Along with Hiiro are three of the other four Gundam pilots; the only one missing is Chang Wu Fei, pilot of the Shenlong Gundam. While Deathscythe and Sandrock fight through hordes of Leos, Heavyarms and Hiiro take on the Taurus defenses directly.
A new enemy appears to face off against Wing Gundam - the prototype Leo known as Tallgeese, the beginning of all mobile suits. However, even with the Tallgeese "ace," the battle does not go as OZ had previously hoped, and so Lady Une employs her back up plan. Missile satellites all around the Earth turn their sights on the Colonies. Lady Une's request is simple. Hand over the Gundams or the Colonies will be destroyed. For the Gundam pilots, it simply can't happen that way. Hiiro climbs out of his Gundam and stands in the open hatch, staring out at Tallgeese. With the push of a little red button, Wing Gundam is reduced to scrap.
Trowa Barton recovers the limp body of Hiiro Yuy and the remaining Gundams make their escape. As Hiiro makes his recovery away from the battlefield, Zechs Merquise, pilot of Tallgeese, has plans to continue the battle interrupted in Siberia. He recovers the parts of Wing Gundam, and, using the Tallgeese design, the design on which all other mobile suits are based on, he rebuilds Wing Gundam and invites Hiiro and Trowa to Antarctica, the only place on Earth where they might battle unnoticed.
Hiiro and Trowa accept; however, Hiiro Yuy is not one to take handouts, and so he battles in Trowa's Heavyarms instead. The battle is interrupted by Relena Dorlian - or should I say, Peacecraft? - who has come to speak with Hiiro. Shortly thereafter, an OZ fleet of mobile suit carriers arrives, and once again, the battle is cut short.
Not long after the battle in Siberia, OZ turned its sights toward outer space, having already conquered all of the Earth. Now that OZ had joined up with the Colonies, they could not risk a Colony attack simply to hold the Gundams in check. Realizing this, Quatre Raberba Winner and Duo Maxwell attack the Singapore spaceport, and the five Gundam pilots return to outer space. Although Duo and Wu Fei bring their Gundams along, Hiiro and Trowa opt to leave theirs on Earth, and Quatre ends up having to self-detonate his in order to clear out an escape.
And so Wing Gundam sits unused on the Earth for a long time. Sally Poe, former Alliance major, recovers the Gundam in order to return it to Hiiro. She's captured by OZ, though, and when Lucrezia Noin helps to break her out, they recover the Gundam and it changes hands once more when it's taken to the Sanc Kingdom.
Hiiro Yuy and Quatre Raberba Winner return to Earth together. Noin meets up with them and takes them to the Sanc Kingdom, where Hiiro gets his Gundam back. Wing Gundam is used to defend the Sanc Kingdom from the threat of the Romefeller Foundation (of which OZ is a subsidiary) until Hiiro takes it to Luxembourg to help the Treize Faction defend against Operation Nova, a Romefeller plan to send mobile dolls mass-produced in outer space to the Earth in order to end all resistance and attain "peace."
While in Luxembourg, Hiiro meets up with Treize Khushrenada, former leader of OZ. Treize reveals to Hiiro a new Gundam, the Gundam Epyon. Hiiro takes Epyon out to end the battle between the Treize Faction and the Romefeller Foundation, and within minutes, the last remaining mobile suit on the field is Epyon, standing alone among the flaming wreckage of destroyed mobile suits and ruined buildings.
With the new strength of Epyon, Wing Gundam is no longer needed, especially considering the damage it sustained during the Luxembourg battle. Wing Gundam is repaired by OZ mechanics, but since no one in the entire organization is considered fit to pilot it, it simply sits and gathers dust.
Zechs Merquise leads the White Fang to war against the entire World Nation. Treize Khushrenada leads the Earth into battle with Tallgeese 2, and Zechs sets the battleship Libra's main cannon on Tallgeese 2. Treize charges straight ahead, prepared to meet Zechs' cannon. Zechs hits the button. The cannon blast races forward, when out of no where, Wing Gundam appears and throws Tallgeese 2 out of the line of fire, taking the blast completely on its own. Most of the bottom half of the Gundam is burned away. The hatch opens; Lady Une jumps out...and this time, Wing Gundam is not rebuilt.
