Hiiro Yuy, the Actual Person
Since Hiiro Yuy is his codename, his actual name, in addition to his entire history and character, is obscured in a veil of mystery. Being only fifteen years of age, his physical strength and knowlegde about computers, mobile suits, battles, and war is immensely impressive....maybe even frightening. But, that's because "Hiiro Yuy" isn't a normal teenager. He's a fully trained assassin.
Hiiro Yuy gets his codename from the deceased ruler of the colonies, Hiiro Yuy, who was widely loved and respected. Yuy encouraged peace and pacifism, trying to discourage the use of weaponry, murder, and the needless conquering that the United Earth Sphere Alliance was so fond of. Seeing him as an obstacle, OZ assassinated him.
Cold and seemingly emotionless, Hiiro's top priority is always completing the missions that are sent to him. Piloting the powerful Gundam Wing, Hiiro never fails to efficiently and quickly complete his mission before dissapearing again. Even outside of his mobile suit, he is able to hijack and arm torpedoes, stop missile launches, and capture gigantic battle ships.
His physical power is overwhelming. As Major Sally Poe once stated, its almost hard to believe that he's human. Grown men are no obstacle for Hiiro to take out in hand to hand combat. His control over his body is so godly that he can regain consciousness without altering his brain waves or pulse, and everything that he manages to do in the series Gundam Wing is done with countless broken bones.
Pain is irrelevant to Hiiro Yuy. His mindset doesn't allow him to feel pain. He can fall from the top of a huge building, break his femur, and then snap it back into place with his own two hands. He then succeeds in walking around with little or no limp whatsoever.
Life is something that is cheap to Hiiro Yuy. He hates his life and wants nothing more than to complete his mission and be allowed the chance to meet the reaper as his reward. More than once, Hiiro has tried to take his life - starting from the very first episode and lasting until the very last episode, Hiiro makes numerous attempts to commit suicide. As long as the current mission is completed, Hiiro doesn't care - he just wants to leave behind the mortal coil that has caused him so much torment.
As stated earlier, Hiiro is introverted, heartless, and cold on his exterior. His eyes, usually only half open, are as frigid as icebergs, showing no visible emotion. His lips never curve into a smile and he never laughs...unless he's mercilessly killed weaklings in a meaningless battle. He speaks in monotone, when he speaks at all, and he never comforts anyone....not even himself. He accepts his missions with a nod and finishes them with his head hanging, devoid completely of all emotion and expression.
However, despite whether he likes it or not, Hiiro is, in reality, a good, kind-hearted person underneath his icy, inhuman exterior. If he was completely devoid of human feelings, why would it be so hard to kill Relena Dorlian/Peacecraft, who deserves to die since she knows so much about him? Surely it should be no harder than just the flexing of his index finger on the trigger of a handgun. If that's so, then why couldn't Hiiro kill her the countless times he's tried? Why has he found himself involuntarily protecting her when she's in danger? Why was it her voice, and her voice alone, that kept him from killing himself when he and Duo escaped from that hospital building?
And that's not the only reason that he's actually a good person. If he didn't give a damn about anything other than the mission, why did he go out of his way to carry out Major Sally's request of disarming missiles that were going to destroy the base they were on when his mission was completed and he could have easily either escaped or sat and awaited the death he wanted so desperately? Why didn't he kill Duo when he was cornered in that jail cell? His gun was aimed, all he had to do was pull the trigger. If he was a lifeless, emotionless killing machine, why did he vomit in disgust when he found himself killing Quatre under the influence of the Zero System?
I don't think Hiiro Yuy likes the fact that he's actually a good person. He might not even know that he's a good person. But he's surely not the expressionless assassin that he was brought up to be. The mission isn't the top priority in his life....whether he likes it or not.
Hiiro is also the victim of a sometimes controlling self-discipline, confidence, and honor. When he accidentally killed the peacewanting General Noventa, whom by no means deserved to die, he traveled from Noventa family member to Noventa family member, handing them a gun and bowing his head in shame, seeking atonement for his sin. And there's absolutely no way that he will receive any sort of charity or pity. When Zechs fixed up Wing so that they could continue their duel that was disrupted the last time, Hiiro wouldn't pilot it because he considered it charity, especially since Zechs had denied his Tallgeese of some of its parts so that Wing could be complete, giving Hiiro an upperhand advantage. Instead, Hiiro piloted Trowa's Heavyarms, learning how to pilot the thing in only one night's time.
And speaking of Zechs Merquise, Hiiro Yuy and Zechs Merquise hold quite an interesting relationship. It's obvious how much they respect each other. After all, Hiiro even said that Zechs was the first person that he'd ever allowed to shake his hand. They love dueling each other and never forget a match that was interrupted. Both are amazed and awed at the other's skills, wanting so desperately the chance to fight each other again, although Zechs shows it a lot more manifestly than Hiiro.
Hiiro also radiates hope and courage. It is his spirit that gave Relena Peacecraft the strength to resurrect the Sanc Kingdom, and it was his determination that fueled Major Sally to make a stand despite her meager force and weak powers. It was Hiiro's words of wisdom that made everything clear for Trowa Barton. It was Hiiro's sacrifice when he almost killed himself destroying Wing that showed to everyone just how serious the colonies were and just how far he would go. It was Hiiro's determination to overcome the burning atmosphere of the earth in order to destroy the falling chunk of the battleship Libra that gave those witnessing confidence and hope. And it was that iron will and raw strength that inspired every single person that witnessed all these events, as well as a few who didn't.
Hiiro Yuy is strong, determined, courageous, and, deep down, loving and caring. It's these factors, as well as the hope and courage that he brings to those who have none, AND his all-around coolness (just look at the guy....he's the freaking epitome of the term "cool") that make Hiiro the perfect hero. I couldn't have asked for a better starring role, and when I get into the other Gundam series,' it's going to be weird and probably a little discouraging not seeing Hiiro Yuy behind the controls of the Wing Gundam.
Hiiro Yuy's Mobile Suit Piloting Skills
Being brought up as a professional assassin and trained in the arts of impeccable murder, he had to have gone through some pretty rough courses. Judging by his masterful skills behind that controls of any mobile suit, its apparent that he also went through some pretty challenging mobile suit piloting courses. He simply wouldn't be a Gundam pilot if he didn't know the ropes well enough to scale the wall.
Hiiro is, of course, at his best when he's behind the controls of his own personal suit, the Wing Gundam (that includes Wing Zero). Anyone had better watch out when you challenge Hiiro in his signature suit, because that's when the already blaring sun intensifies its shine. There's just almost no way to stop him when he's piloting Wing and he's determined to win.
Also, Hiiro was one of the first (he may have been the first) to conquer the Zero System. As you may already know Zero System (in addition to being the title of this site) is a system that goes into a mobile suit's cockpit, feeding back battle data to the pilot in order to allow him to make instant decisions, amplifying the pilot's reaction time. However, there's a flaw to the system - often times it'll go too fast for the pilot to keep up, showing the pilot things that will happen far in the future, and therefore causing them to see things they just can't handle. Often times when this happens, the pilot will start to freak out, screaming insanely and losing control. Sure, Hiiro went through that (he's not God, after all), but he was able to control the system before anyone else could.
However, Hiiro isn't only limited to piloting Wing or Wing Zero. If you scroll to the top of this page, you'll see just how many suits he's piloted and how radically they range in differance. Give him a few seconds to get situated in any mobile suit, and you can garauntee that he'll be kickin' butt once he's in action.
Hiiro's piloted other Gundams in addition to standard enemy suits such as the Taurus and Leo. The actual list is as follows: Gundam Wing, Gundam Wing Zero, Gundam Heavyarms, Gundam Epyon, Vayeate (when it was only half finished), Mercurius, Taurus, and Leo. The total count is 8, and I could be missing some. Even so, that number is still way higher than anyone else's total count of suits piloted.
PJ's Opinion of Hiiro Yuy
Jesus....what can I say? I'm actually afraid to say anything. Words alone simply do not do this character justice. He is just so damned cool. Even in that skimpy green jumpsuit he wears often which, should, by all means, look fruity, he still looks so freaking cool. As I said earlier, he's simply the epitome of the word.
Well, for one, there's simply no way that the writer of the series could have come up with a better hero. They hit the jackpot with Hiiro Yuy. It's just so fun to watch Hiiro, and to see his character grow and flourish is something that is just out of this world. As an anime fan, a Gundam fan, a fiction fan, and a writing fan, I know and appreciate just how deep the character goes. Hell, Hiiro's so deep that I was actually kind of intimidated when I was thinking about how I was going to write this bio.
Anyway, there's not much more I can say. I love Hiiro Yuy. He's such a great character that I doubt anyone couldn't love the guy. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that you don't learn his actual name in the Gundam Wing series....Oh well. There's always Endless Waltz, I suppose....
